The Public Market will provide a unique daily shopping experience, a gathering place, and an entertainment venue to serve Dickinson residents and to attract regional shoppers and tourists from Galveston County and throughout South East Texas. The “Market Experience” will include the Market building shops and restaurants, as well as areas for entertainment, live music, meetings, and classes (cooking, entrepreneurship, etc.). Amenities will complete the experience with gathering spots for conversation, outside eating, and playgrounds for kids of all ages. A landscaped meandering path will lead guests from the Market to enjoy a special underutilized waterfront feature of Dickinson – the Dickinson Bayou.
Dickinson was ground zero for the devastating impacts of Hurricane Harvey, with numerous deaths and overwhelming destruction of homes and businesses caused by a 13 foot wall of water. Without proper intervention, Dickinson risks experiencing long term economic stagnation amidst a dispirited community. The Public Market will address these issues by providing new public spaces for residents to appreciate, and shopping venues and significant economic opportunities for the community to enjoy. The Market’s tenants will include stores, stalls, carts and ‘day-tables’ that focus on fresh foods, rounded out by prepared foods and restaurants, as well as crafts and other needed neighbor services.
The purpose of the Public Market is to give Dickinson and the region the resources to rebuild into an even stronger community, create a new regional attraction, and provide a colorful and vital experience for all Gulf Coast residents.
